can you exercise after shockwave therapy
KAPHAPHYSIO | 06.Feb,2025

You might have a question whether you can work out after shockwave therapy, and to be honest, it depends on some factors.

Generally, it's best to skip the exercise right after doing the treatment, just take some time to rest and then slowly get back into your daily routine based on how you're feeling. After the therapy, you could feel a bit of discomfortableness—like mild pain, swelling, or bruising where you were treated. Jumping into a workout too soon could make those symptoms worse or even cause some issues. So, it’s better to ease into it!

Different body parts have different conditions

🔹  For shoulders

After shockwave therapy, patients with a rotator cuff injury can start doing some appropriate functional exercises to aid in recovery.  And any vigorous activities need to avoid, because that might cause excessive abduction or external rotation of the shoulder joint.

Generally speaking, it's recommended to steer clear of strenuous exercise for about 1-2 days after the treatment. After that, you can gradually ease back into your daily activities and light exercises. Just listen to your body and take it slow!

🔹  For ankle

After shockwave therapy treatment, the patients can do some moderate activities for their ankle, but it’s best to avoid intense exercise. Moderate ankle activity can boost blood circulation and speed up your recovery, but strenuous workouts might interfere with the treatment.

For better recovery after an ankle sprain, you can start moderate activities 1-2 days post-treatment, like walking indoors. Just remember to steer clear of any intense exercises. The specific timing for activities should depend on your individual recovery, and you can adjust the intensity based on how you're feeling in the 1-2 weeks following treatment.

🔹  For inner thigh

· After the shockwave therapy treatment on the inner thigh, patients need to according to their own pain conditions to get back to the exercise. And typically, most patient can do the exercise about 1-4 weeks after treatment.

· And a few caveats need to be noted:

1)If your injury is mild and you can recover from pain is quickly, you may be can gradually start sports again in 1-2 weeks.

2)However, if your injury condition is more serious or your recovery is slower, it could take 3-4 weeks or even longer before you can get back to your usual activities. You just listen to your body and consult with your healthcare provider to find the right timeline for you!

🔹  Sacral ilium bone

· After the shockwave therapy treatment on the sacroiliac joint, most patients need to wait some time before jumping back into exercise to avoid any side effects on the treatment area.

· The exact timing for when you can start exercising will depend on the intensity and the frequency of the shockwave therapy you choose, how well you’re recovering, and your doctor’s advice. Make sure to follow their recommendations for a safe return to activity!

The effect of the type of exercise

🔹  Light ExerciseA few caveats need to be noted

· After shockwave therapy for rehabilitation, it's a good idea to wait about 24 hours before doing light exercises like walking or jogging, these activities are easy to do and can help improve blood circulation, aiding in tissue recovery.

🔹  Strenuous Exercise

· For more vigorous activities, like football or basketball, it's best to wait about one week after shockwave therapy treatment and these high-impact activities can put a lot of stress on the treatment area, which might affect the results of your therapy and could even worsen your injury.

· So, take your time and ease back into more intense workouts!

Consult your doctor's advice

· It's essential to consult your doctor before exercising any part of your body after finishing shockwave therapy treatment. The doctor can provide tailored advice based on your specific situation, including the treatment site, intensity , frequency, sessions of the therapy, and your overall health.

· If your doctor approves exercising, you start at a lower intensity and gradually increase both the intensity and duration. Be sure to protect the treatment area from excessive pressure or friction during your workouts. If you experience any discomfort, such as pain or swelling, stop exercising immediately and consult your doctor for further guidance.
